This month, we hear from Thomas Prinsloo as he shares a glimpse into his interests and passions. From his dream of traveling to Europe or Asia to his love for reality TV and music, Thomas gives us a peek into what keeps him entertained and inspired. Read on to learn more about Thomas!
What is your favorite part about working at Roboyo?
In a way, you have the opportunity to shape your own path here. If you work hard, you can build your personal brand, make a name for yourself, and be recognized for your efforts.
There’s also the opportunity to focus on different areas since we’re not limited to just one technology. When working with clients, you represent Roboyo through your dedication and hard work—and that doesn’t go unnoticed.
At first, I was a bit concerned about being invisible, especially being in New Zealand, so far away on a small island… But I’m happy to say that everyone’s efforts are recognized, and you receive that feedback.

Can you tell us about one of your recent projects and what you have been recently working on?
That’s an interesting question – what’s unique about my current project, is how little we can share about it! And even how some people working on the project aren’t privy to all of the information, due to the high level of confidentiality involved. So apart from the usual technical challenges during a project, we dealt with some levels of information obfuscation and there was quite a difference between the environments where development takes place, and what production will look like. That meant making sure things are fairly scalable and configurable and to have good communication with those able to access higher environments – generally citizens with clearance. That was another especially challenging aspect – I’m not a New Zealand citizen yet. So many of us originate from other countries, especially here in Australia and New Zealand. So, in this project, I likely won’t have that satisfaction of seeing the project live – definitely a unique factor.
What would you like people to know about your job?
I think many people don’t fully understand what we do because it’s not a traditional IT role—we’re not programmers, developers, or typical testers. Our role is very broad, and we’re not limited to a strict job description.
We master certain technologies, but we also build and manage client relationships since we’re the face of Roboyo for them. We need to shift focus between communicating with architects about technical aspects, to designing and developing the applications in Appian, design user-friendly interfaces, there’s a lot of variety in what we do.

What advice would you give to your younger self or to someone who is starting their career?
Be patient and don’t rush into things. Sometimes, I regret jumping at the first idea or solution that comes along due to pressure. Rushing will come back to bite you later. We sometimes do this because we want to get things done quickly, but I believe we should be more patient.
Another piece of advice I’d give is to trust your gut. As you become more senior, you can rely on it more because of your experience.
From a personal perspective, I’d tell my younger self to travel more.
What’s on your bucket list?
That would be to travel more, visit Europe or Asia.
What are you currently watching?
I don’t watch much TV since I don’t have a lot of time, but right now, I’m watching Clarkson’s Farm. It’s a show by Jeremy Clarkson, who also hosted Top Gear since 2000, which I really enjoyed! For me, it wasn’t about the cars; I just like his personality, I find him funny.
I usually prefer reality shows over fiction. Before this, I was watching Hunted Australia, which takes place in Victoria. It was really good! The show follows people trying to evade capture by the “pretend” police, and some manage to stay hidden for a long time without being found.
What are you currently listening to?
I’m the kind of person who listens to music while working – it helps block out all the other sounds. But to stay focused, I can only listen to songs I already know, not new ones. One of my favorite bands I’ve been listening to lately is The Killers – I enjoy both their old and new music, and I usually have the algorithm find some related music for me! I also like listening to South African music to stay connected to my language, Afrikaans. One of my favorite bands I’ve been listening to is Spoegwolf, a local rock band, and also some old classics from my younger days that even my kids enjoy and try to understand.
