In this Employee Spotlight, we had the pleasure of speaking with Karina Hernández, one of Roboyo’s Managers of Intelligent Automation Engineering. Based in Mexico, Karina has been a vital part of the Roboyo team since December 2019. She shares her thoughts on remote work, cultural exchange, and working with high-profile clients, along with insights into her professional growth and challenges she’s overcome in the fast-evolving field of intelligent automation.

My favorite parts of working here are 1) Remote work flexibility, the ability to work remotely offers a great work-life balance and the freedom to manage my schedule effectively. 2) Cultural exchange, collaborating with colleagues from diverse cultures and regions, including different states in Mexico, enriches my understanding and appreciation of various traditions and perspectives. And 3) High-profile clients, engaging with prestigious companies provides valuable experience and opportunities for professional growth.

“Since joining, my role has evolved significantly, both professionally and personally. Initially, my focus was primarily technical, which suited my personality”

What do you like the most about the work we do here?

What I like most about our work is the tangible impact that intelligent automation (RPA) has on our clients’ key operations and strategic goals. Once we complete a project, we can immediately see the improvements in efficiency and productivity on the clients’ side. It’s incredibly rewarding to hear clients say things like, “This will help us a lot” or “This will save us so much time” when they see the bot in production. The immediate results and positive feedback make our work truly satisfying.

Since joining, my role has evolved significantly, both professionally and personally. Initially, my focus was primarily technical, which suited my personality. However, as a Manager and Automation Lead now, my role has become much more comprehensive. I have broader responsibilities, I am not only involved in the technical aspects but also in following robust methodologies, focusing on people, and even participating in sales.

I have had professional growth, this expanded scoped has pushed me out of my comfort zone, which I find beneficial for my growth. And of course, personal development, the diverse responsibilities have helped me develop a more well-rounded skill set.  Overall, my role feels more integral and fulfilling, and I appreciate the continuous opportunities for growth.

I began my journey in the industry about seven years ago, right after graduating. I joined one of the Big Four firms, which was just starting its RPA journey. As one of the firsts developers there, I had the opportunity to learn and work with Blue Prism, Automation Anywhere and, UiPath.

Creating my first bot was a pivotal moment for me. I was genuinely amazed by what RPA could achieve. At that time, RPA was a relatively new field, and I was not sure about its future. However, looking back, I believe I made an excellent choice. My career has evolved in ways I never imagined, and I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had.

What do you enjoy most about working here?

What I enjoy the most about working here is the flexibility of remote work. It allows me to find a balance between my professional and personal life, even if it’s not always perfect. Additionally, despite the geographical distance, our team has managed to collaborate effectively and maintain productivity. This sense of teamwork and the ability to work from home are truly valuable to me.

“At that time, RPA was a relatively new field, and I was not sure about its future. However, looking back, I believe I made an excellent choice.”

One recent accomplishment that stands out is a challenging migration project. We transitioned from UiPath to Microsoft Power Automate, which required me to quickly upskill in Power Automate. We successfully migrated about 40 automations, ranging from medium to high complexity, within a tight schedule. The Client’s robust end-to-end methodology meant we had to meet high expectations.

Despite the demands, the project was incredibly rewarding. Reflecting on it, I realize that a year ago, I couldn’t have imagined achieving this.

1. Team building activities: initially my internal team wasn’t very familiar with one another. I implemented activities to help us get to know each other better, which significantly improved our dynamics.
2. Personal engagement: in project discussions, I make it a point to ask personal questions, not just work-related ones. This shows my team members that I care about them as individuals, not just their work.
3. Open communication: I encourage my team to ask questions and reach out to me anytime. They know I am always happy to help, which builds their confidence in communicating openly.

When I’m working and have lots of calls or meetings, I don’t usually play any music. However, if I need to work on a solution design, document, or development, I usually listen to classical music playlists. Lately, I have been enjoying “The Best of Mozart”. I just go to YouTube, type in “Mozart”, and click on a video that has many of his songs. I don’t have one favorite; I just go with whatever comes up.

If I could instantly become an expert in any skill or subject, it would be data science. This expertise would perfectly complement intelligent automation, allowing for powerful data analysis and decision-making. The potential applications of data science are vast, making it an incredibly valuable skill. Although I haven’t taken any formal training yet, it’s something I’m keen to pursue because I believe it would be both fascinating and highly beneficial.

One thing on my bucket list is to learn how to play the violin. I’m currently taking classes, and although it’s quite challenging, I find it incredibly enjoyable. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested. My teaches emphasizes that playing the violin requires a state of mind, which can be difficult for me to achieve due to my tight deadlines. Therefore, I also need to practice relaxation techniques. It’s a double challenge, but one that I’m excited to tackle.

THANK YOU, KARINA
