Why Lean Six Sigma Projects Fall Short (And How to Fix Them)

Jul 12, 2024 | 3 min read

So, you’ve probably heard about Lean Six Sigma – the superhero of process improvement. It’s the ultimate tool to make your processes faster, smoother, and just all-around better. But sometimes, even superheroes stumble and your Lean Six Sigma projects can hit a snag or two along the way. But fear not! We’re here to shed some light on why these projects sometimes fall short and, more importantly, how to turn things around for the better.

What is Lean Six Sigma?

Let’s start with a clear definition about what exactly Lean Six Sigma is. Lean Six Sigma combines two popular business principles—lean and Six Sigma—into one methodology, aimed at improving organizational performance and eliminating waste. In our world, it’s a way to boost both the efficiency and quality of a process. And trust us, when done right, it works wonders.

Driving efficiency, quality, and competitive advantage

Once you get Lean Six Sigma firing on all cylinders it has the power to streamline business processes, cut unnecessary waste, and makes things run like a well-oiled machine. That means you’re getting more done in less time, which is always a win. Plus, it’s not just about saving time and money; it’s about making smarter decisions backed by cold, hard data.

When it comes to quality, Lean Six Sigma makes sure every product or service that goes out the door is of the highest quality. That means eliminating errors and variations in your processes.

Let’s take customer service for example. If you’re suddenly bombarded with customer complaints, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and dive into the data. Look at call volume, wait times, customer feedback, and resolution rates. You might uncover issues like inefficient call routing, customer services representatives needing more training, or outdated software systems. Armed with this insight, you can take targeted action to fix each problem. And voila! You’ll no doubt see a boost in service quality, happier customers who are more likely to stick around, and positive word of mouth referrals.

So, when you’ve got Lean Six Sigma in your corner, you’re not just keeping up with the competition – you’re leaving them in the dust.

Sounds great, but where does it go wrong?

There might be a million reasons why your Lean Six Sigma project isn’t quite hitting the mark. Trust us, we’ve been there and seen it all. But there are a few common culprits we see time and time again. So, let’s dive in and see if any of these ring a bell.

  1. Missing the Mark on Customer Needs
Picture this: You’re deep in your Lean Six Sigma project, all geared up to tackle those pesky inefficiencies. But have you asked yourself whether you’re really addressing what your customers truly care about? It’s easy to get caught up in internal metrics and forget the bigger picture. Take a step back, listen to your customers (really listen), and align your efforts with what matters most to them.

If you do not know how to ask the right question, you discover nothing.

W. Edwards Deming

  1. Stuck on Predefined Solutions
Ever find yourself starting a project already convinced you know the solution? Guilty as charged, right? Lean Six Sigma is all about data-driven decision-making so, ditch those preconceived notions and let the data do the talking. You might just be surprised by what you uncover when you keep an open mind.

If you define the problem correctly, you almost have the solution.

Steve Jobs

  1. One-Size-Fits-All Mentality
There’s no doubt about it, Lean Six Sigma is highly effective. But it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Sometimes, you’ve got to think outside the Lean Six Sigma box. If the problem at hand doesn’t quite fit the methodology, don’t force it. Be flexible, explore other approaches, and find what works best for your unique business problem.

Progress is impossible without change; and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.

George Bernard Shaw

  1. Data Dilemmas
Data is the lifeblood of Lean Six Sigma. But what happens when the data throws you a curve-ball? Maybe it’s not showing what you expected, or perhaps it’s just not adding up. Don’t ignore it. Embrace the uncertainty, reassess your approach, and be willing to pivot if needed. It’s much better to course-correct now than to blindly forge ahead.

Who rejects change is the architect of decay. The only human institution which rejects progress is the cemetery.

Harold Wilson

  1. Lack of Stakeholder Love
Last but definitely not least, let’s talk about stakeholder engagement. You know the saying, “teamwork makes the dream work”? Well, it couldn’t be truer for Lean Six Sigma projects. Get everyone onboard, from the C-suite to the front-line employees. When everyone’s pulling in the same direction, success follows.

Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is Success.

Henry Ford
