BUILDING A WORKPLACE WHERE WOMEN IN TECH THRIVE

Mar 8, 2022 | 4 min read

Roboyo is not a typical technology consultancy. We have been at the forefront of business process automation since the sector began, less than a decade ago. We started as pioneers, and we continue to break new ground and find ways to make a positive impact.

As we’ve grown into the world’s largest specialist intelligent automation company, we’ve learned that our growth and contribution to our clients’ successes is the result of one thing – our people.

We take care of each other. We are inclusive and welcome each other’s differences, whether that be different cultures, different languages, different points of view or different life stages. This makes us stronger and makes things a lot more fun.

If we drill down into the different life stages, one stage of life (at least biologically) which affects women more than men is starting a family. Unfortunately, we know this is also a phase in life when many women feel less confident about being a more valuable candidate and choose not to seek out new opportunities. The result is that thousands of brilliant women are either stuck in jobs they’ve outgrown or locked out of the labour market for long periods of time, thus creating an imbalance at both an industry and organizational level.

Couple this with the fact that women are already underrepresented in the tech industry – only 3%* of females say a career in technology is their first choice – and we can’t afford for an additional gender imbalance as a result of career breaks, maternity etc. further up the chain.

Deloitte Global predicts that large global technology firms, on average, will reach nearly 33% overall female representation in their workforces in 2022, up slightly more than 2 percentage points from 2019. Whilst progress is being made, it’s not coming fast enough.

Whilst the tech industry leads the way in innovation, it’s woefully behind the times when it comes to gender equality.

Eleonor Forsberg, Roboyo

NEXT LEVEL OPPORTUNITY

Here at Roboyo, we aim to improve equality for women in tech by providing a workplace where women can thrive. As an equal rights employer, we strive to attract talent at all stages of life, whether you’re at the beginning of your career, planning a family, on parental leave or have a long professional career behind you and seek new challenges.

Our Consulting Manager, Eleonor Forsberg, is soon to be a new mother. Eleonor started her career in intelligent automation consulting more than three years ago and has extensive knowledge of all parts of the automation journey, both from a technical and a strategic perspective. She joined us as Consulting Manager in the middle of her pregnancy, and we are thrilled to have her with us.

Meet Eleonor and hear her thoughts on developing her career and joining a new employer during pregnancy.

Sofia: What was the main reason you decided to join Roboyo?

Eleonor: It really was a no-brainer; everyone I spoke to during my interviews was super friendly and I immediately felt a sense of belonging and that the people here really love working together and are passionate about intelligent automation. It quickly became clear that Roboyans really believe in what they do, it’s not just talk. Also, Roboyo is currently going through an exciting period of growth, with lots of opportunities both regionally and globally which is a fun and exciting journey to be a part of.

Sofia: What’s important for you when developing in your career?

Eleonor: To be given opportunities to grow and try new things. I think it’s very important that an employer helps its employees make full use of their potential and develop their skills. Employers need to see and hear their employees – I really feel like the leaders at Roboyo have this capacity, you feel valued.

Sofia: How was your experience switching employer in the middle of a pregnancy?

Eleonor: With Roboyo, it felt very natural and safe to do so. Even though I was quite early in my pregnancy when I first met with Roboyo I decided to tell my hiring manager straight away. The response I got was “That is so wonderful to hear, you really didn’t have to tell me and regardless, we want to hire competence for the long run”. From that moment I knew that this is a great employer who has a progressive perspective on value. I mean yes, it is 2022 and this should be a given for all employers out there, but we all know this isn’t always the case.

Sofia: How do you look at building a career throughout all different stages of life?

Eleonor: I share the perspective of Roboyo here – I think that true value creation comes from having a long-term and flexible perspective. The last couple of years have taught us that unexpected things can happen at unexpected times, so it’s important to be able to adjust to new situations. The same goes for your career – you will have different conditions depending on where you are in life, whether you are a graduate, pregnant or approaching retirement, and there should always be room for that. I think that is what represents a great employer – being able to support these different needs and situations in life and have a long-term strategy of value creation.

Sofia: Thank you for joining the team, Eleonor, we´re so happy to call you a Roboyan!
